The Government of Åland has decided to spend 185.000€ on exploration of the champagne wreck (a.k.a. wreck M1 Fö 403.3) as well as commercialisation of the champagne and beer.

A total of 90.000€ will be spent on the continued exploration of the champagne schooner and the development of a touring exhibition. The research will focus on documenting the wreck and further exploration of the wreck and its cargo in order to learn more about the ship’s origin and history.
The Government of Åland finally decided to explicitly dedicate resources (95.000€) towards commercialising the champagne- and beer findings.
The funds will be used to maximise the short and long term effects of the finding on the publicity of Åland. More specifically the money will be used to:

  • Carry out a champagne auction on the Åland Islands
  • Analyse the beer in order to recreate it for commercial use
  • Hire experts and a project manager in the continued work with commercializing the champagne and beer

The net revenue from the auction(s) and commercial activities are to be used for maritime historical and maritime archaeological as well as environmental causes with regards to the Baltic Sea.
